Pay via Cash App

Learn how to set up Bitcoin Lightning in Cash App and pay invoices instantly with ultra-low fees.

Why use Bitcoin Lightning?

The Bitcoin Lightning Network is a fast, secure, and private layer built on top of Bitcoin. Payments are settled instantly, transaction fees are fractions of a cent, and you don't need a credit card. Cash App is one of the easiest ways to use it.

Verify Your Cash App for Bitcoin

To buy, send, or pay with Bitcoin, Cash App requires a one-time identity verification:

  • Open Cash App and tap the Bitcoin tile (or go to the Money/Bank tab and select Bitcoin).
  • Tap "Enable Bitcoin" or "Verify Identity".
  • Follow the prompts to enter your legal name, date of birth, address, and the last 4 digits of your SSN.
  • You may need to upload a photo of a government-issued ID (driver's license or passport) and take a quick selfie.

Verification is usually approved in a few minutes, but can sometimes take up to 24-48 hours. Plan ahead before making your first purchase!

Fund Your Wallet (Two Options)

Once verified, you have two convenient ways to pay a Lightning invoice:

  1. Pay from your Cash balance: You can pay directly using your regular USD Cash balance. Cash App will automatically convert your dollars to Bitcoin at the moment of payment (a small conversion fee may apply).
  2. Pre-purchase Bitcoin: Tap "Buy" inside the Bitcoin tab to purchase Bitcoin ahead of time. Paying directly from your Bitcoin balance incurs no conversion fee at checkout.

Scan the QR Code to Pay

When you click "Buy" or "Unlock" on a file on Nutt and choose Lightning payment:

  • A checkout screen will appear showing a Lightning Network QR Code and a payment amount.
  • Open Cash App and go to the home screen.
  • Tap the Send button (the paper airplane icon).
  • Tap the QR Scanner icon in the top corner of the screen.
  • Point your camera at the Nutt QR code to scan it. Cash App will automatically load the invoice details and amount.

Using your phone? If you are browsing Nutt on the same phone you have Cash App on, tap the invoice text to copy it (it is a long string of letters starting with lnbc...). In Cash App, tap "Send" and paste this code directly into the "To" field.

Confirm and Unlock

Review the transaction details on your Cash App screen:

  • Verify the recipient name (Nutt Marketplace or the invoice partner) and the USD amount.
  • Choose your payment method (Bitcoin balance or Cash balance).
  • Tap Confirm & Send.
  • Once sent, return to the Nutt page. The system will detect the payment in real-time, and your file will unlock instantly!
